A Week of Giving Back, Day 1 – Seattle Area Charities

With this week being Thanksgiving, I have themed all my posts around giving back. Giving back to people in need, giving back to the planet, and to those close to you. I think I am not alone in saying that the world feels like a colder place than it used to be, and that everyone could use some love right now.

To start this theme, I wanted to do a simple post hi-lighting some fabulous places to give to here in the Pacific Northwest this holiday season. No sponsorships were involved in this post – these are simply and truly places that have touch my heart with their mission and do incredible things in the greater Seattle area. If you have a favorite non-for-profit/charity that deserves an honorable mention, please feel free to give them a shout-out including where to donate in the comments!

Hopefully this is some food for thought for you, and inspires you to give some help to those in need <3

Seattle Children’s Hospital

Seattle Children’s is a place that has touched so many lives here in the Northwest. Their care is so specialized, and their uncompensated care fund provides expensive, emergency care to children in need at little to no cost to their family. Our daughter had a short overnight stay at Seattle Children’s after a terrifying run-in with reactive airway disease, and every person who treated her touched our lives forever. I know so many people whose children have had life’changing procedures done here, and would have been lost without them!

Seattle Humane

From the Seattle Humane Website – What’s Different About Seattle Humane?
We are an independent, nonprofit organization. We are not affiliated with city or county animal shelters or with any other humane society locally or nationally.
We save 7,000 animals a year. With no time limits.
We achieved a 98 percent Live Save Rate in FY 2015-16, one of the highest in the nation.
80 cents of every dollar donated benefits the animals. Your donation goes directly to the care of homeless pets.
Seattle Humane received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator – the nation’s leading charity evaluation group.
82% of our budget comes from donations. We receive no local, state or federal funding.

In addition to these key points, Seattle Humane has been working to take in animals from shelters in areas hit by natural disasters this year, to make room for rescued animals that are waiting to be reunited with their families. Seattle Humane not only rescued these rescues from Texas, California and Puerto Rico, they worked hard to find all of them homes quickly!

Babies of Homelessness

Babies of Homelessness was created to raise awareness of the innocent babies who, through no fault of their own, are the victims of homelessness. Going through the struggles of surviving with their parent(s), their basic physical needs–food, clothing, and medical care–are often woefully unmet. The children we aim to help are often living in homeless encampments, cars and RV’s or bouncing from shelter to shelter.

The goal of their organization is to raise awareness of these issues and to bring immediate essentials directly to the babies and small children found in homeless situations. Babies of Homelessness offers help and assistance to the parent(s) before it becomes a CPS issue. The greater goal is to have a voice at the state legislature level raising awareness for the need of more safe housing options for these families, which will keep these babies off the streets and in safe living environments.
