L’Ecole No. 41 has been one of my favorite Washington Vineyards since my first visit to Walla Walla. Before actually paying their Winery and tasting room a visit, all I knew about L’Ecole was that their wines were all over shelves here in the PNW. I didn’t spend much time trying them, I guess because I didn’t know where to start and wasn’t sure if they were all hype or not.
You definitely have to make the drive to Walla Walla to get their tasting room experience. This school house is the real deal, built in 1915 and converted into a wine tasting room in the eighties. They did a beautiful job preserving the old schoolhouse feel…. when you walk in it still has that old wood/library smell that you can only get from historic buildings such as this.
L’Ecole No. 41 is just north of Walla Walla, so they are one of my favorite first stops to make upon arrival! The bonus is that they are also next door to another one of my favorite wineries, Woodward Canyon.
One thing that I love about L’Ecole No. 41 is that I feel like there is a wine here for everyone. For white wine drinkers, they make a beautiful floral dry Semillon, and their Luminesce is a perfect light summer patio wine. I currently am on a Rose kick for spring, and I brought back a bottle of two of their Grenache Rose to hang onto for when the weather starts to warm up and I need a nice wine to cool down with on a hot day.
If you are more of a red wine person, the Estate Perigee is one of my favorite’s they have to offer, but you of course can’t go wrong with one of their Syrah’s.
I also love that they are a kid and pet friendly facility (pets are allowed on the grounds but not inside). Like many wineries in Walla Walla, they don’t have any food offered on-site, but encourage you to bring a picnic to enjoy on their lawn.
If you aren’t able to make a trip to Walla Walla, I would suggest you grab one of their wines off the shelf next time you see one and give them a try!
