5 Big Skincare Things I Wish I Knew in my Twenties

In my twenties, I was a huge abuser of my own skin.

I hit tanning beds ALL THE TIME. Pretty much daily.

I had absolutely no skincare routine what-so-ever.

I partied all the time, and fell asleep with my makeup still on almost every night.

Now that I am over 30, I regret all this so much! It is typical for people to tell you that things will catch up with you as you age, and guess what… all of these things have caught up with me! So, this post is for all you little babies in your teens and twenties out there, feeling that your skin is invincible and will be this supple forever!

Here are the top 5 skincare things I learned the hard way...

1. Those tanning beds will get ‘ya.

Have you heard this before? Well guess what, it’s for real! Skin cancer is real, age spots for real, and regular abuse of tanning beds will absolutely catch up with you. I am currently scheduled to have two suspicious moles chopped off, and am using heavy-duty skin lightening products to remove all the sun spots from my skin. I understand wanting to have the look of a nice healthy tan, and don’t get me wrong, I still want to look tan these days too. However, I would absolutely reach for a self-tanning lotion for a gradual glow versus a tanning bed which will prematurely age your skin, cause permanent discoloration and give you skin cancer.

This is a picture of my siblings and I when I was 23 years old. We are all the same skin color naturally… so much tanning abuse on my part!

2. It’s called “anti-aging” for a reason!

Most skincare products say they have ‘anti-aging’ qualities to them… know that anti-aging means it slows down the process of aging skin, but it doesn’t mean it will reverse it! Younger me never really used these kind of products thinking that when I started seeing wrinkles I would fight them then. This is the absolute wrong kind of thinking, because once the wrinkles are there, reversing them is MUCH more difficult! I wish I had properly cared for my skin keeping it better toned and moisturized to prevent wrinkles.

3. A skincare routine is necessary

Occasional use of a product or two is better than nothing, but in reality, taking care of your skin should be something you do as regularly as you brush your teeth. There should be a morning and evening part of your routine too. Once you make it a routine it will not be a hassle!

4. Don’t skip the sunscreen.

I can’t tell you how many times I refused sunscreen wanting to get a good tan, and I have many friends who did the same. However, the sun is harsh, and it is absolutely possible to still get some color while wearing sunscreen. No need to go crazy with those SPF 100 lotions; a SPD 30 will do just fine. Don’t believe me on this one? Research how models like Kate Upton and Miranda Kerr feel about skin abuse! Many people who are beautiful as a profession lather on the sunscreen and hide their faces with towels or hats when laying out because their skin is so perfect, and they can’t risk sun spots and wrinkles.

The pictures below are of me this August, before I started my Rodan + Fields skincare regimen. My sun spots were absolutely out of control!

5. If you listen to this advice, your skin will feel amazing!

This past year I decided enough was enough and I was finally committed to taking care of my skin. For the first time since my early twenties, my skin feels soft, even, and glowing. Realizing that my skin could have always felt this great, PLUS I wouldn’t be fighting so many wrinkles frustrates me, and makes me wish I had started caring sooner. The good news is that from this point on, I know I am committed to taking care of my skin and can hopefully slow down the process from here!

My skin after only 6 weeks of correction with my Rodan + Fields Reverse Regimen. So even, toned, and spots disappearing already! Feels like my skin is 20 again 🙂

I will be posting more about my skincare routine later, but if you are interested in what is doing all this reversing for me, it is Rodan + Fields!! My skin was crazy bad and I am so floored at how great my results are with Rodan + Fields, to the point where I decided to sell and promote their products. Here is a link to what they offer, but please feel free to comment below if you would like me to answer any questions for you via email! Plus, all my preferred customers get free shipping and 10% off their orders 🙂

Thank you for reading, and I hope this inspires you to start a good skincare regimen soon!

  1. Love this post! Skin care is so important! Like you, I never used to wear SPF or anything. It’s only been in the last couple years that I became serious about a skin care routine and taking care of it. I wish I started before I started seeing the fine lines pop up but now I am extra diligent with my skin care and instead of a chore, it’s more of a hobby now! 🙂

Your skin looks amazing btw!! I can see a lot of improvements!
