Planning a Perfectly Seattle Father’s Day

For our first Father’s Day as a family I wanted to make my husband feel special, but I also wanted to make sure that he had fun. Hallmark holidays like Mother’s and Father’s Day feel a little scripted and cheesy to me, so I struggled at first with how to make our day genuine and memorable. I figure that out of years and years of Father’s Day celebrations to come, the first likely will be the one he remembers!

I felt like executing this day well came in two parts: the present and the plans. My first thought was to do a craft that he would appreciate, then also plan an activity he would find fun that we could do as a family.

SO, for the Present….

Before our daughter was born, we joked a lot about who was going to be the favorite and why. For Father’s Day I decided to concede… Dad gets to be the fav!

Instead of a card, I crafted this onesie and tutu myself, and it was incredibly easy! I purchased a bolt of tulle and a spool of ribbon, and just cut the tulle into strips and tied them onto the ribbon until I had enough to go around her waist. No sewing involved at all!

For the onesie, I started with a plain white Gerber onesie and some iron on patches. I was excited to find these ‘cut-it-yourself’ sparkly iron-on patches at the craft store… it comes as a sheet of paper, and you just cut out the design you want to iron on! I printed some letters to trace and simply ironed on the patches! This onesie wasn’t something heavy-duty that we could wash over and over, but for the sake of the day, it accomplished what I was going for just perfectly.

The other part of the surprise was also part of a joke… my husband had been egging me on my whole pregnancy with the thought (joke) that our baby needed an Xbox One. Well lucky dad, because he actually got one for Father’s Day! I staged the Xbox in her crib after changing her into this onesie, and told him to go get her up for the day. I wish I had taken better photos, but alas all I did was whip out my iPhone and barely manage a few, but hopefully you get the picture! Okay, now onto the PLANS!

My best friend and I are lucky that we have hubbys who get along, so we thought it would be fun to do a double family date to take the guys out for brews and a round of mini golf!

First, we headed to Populuxe Brewing as a group, kids in tow for some beers. Dads got to drink, moms got to drive 🙂 We love Populuxe because they are kid friendly, and they always have an amazing food truck in their driveway to grub on! Their beers are seriously delish… one of my favorite breweries in the Fremont area of Seattle, so all these other things are just huge bonuses 🙂

Afterwards, we went just up the street to Interbay Golf Center on 15th Ave West in Seattle. When we lived in Queen Anne we loved coming here for an in-city Par 3 course to play, or a chance to hit the two- story driving range. They also have a little putt putt course so we treated the guys to a few more beers and a family game mini golf! It was a nice sunny summer day and our little one was more than happy to go for a ride on mommy in the Ergo, so it all worked perfect!
