Smoggy Day Trip to Funko (Everett, WA)

August in Seattle has been a sad month for the past few summers – lots of major wildfires burning up and down the west coast has resulted in thick, smoky air and poor air quality in Seattle. As a mom to an asthma kid, air quality matters hugely, and last summer Seattle was so smoky that we were ranking with air exponentially less breathable than Beijing… a total deal breaker for outdoor activities! My daughter loves playing outside in summers, and on our days off together I often took her to the beach or the pool. So, this one random Tuesday I had to explain to my teary toddler that the pool was out and we had to find something to do indoors.

With the fires lasting the whole month, we had burnt through a lot of the easy/normal indoor things to do at home as well as out and about… though she had learned the secret of going to Costco for food samples around lunch, I knew I had to step up my game since boredom was imminent.

This was when she was 3 and a half years old and ‘characters’ were a big thing to her. She talked non-stop about movie characters, cartoon characters… she wanted to wear band-aids because there are ‘characters’ on them, she asked me to make her mac and cheese with ‘character’ noodles. This lead me to think of the new Funko store that opened in the greater Seattle area. If you aren’t familiar with Funko, they are an action figure producer with somewhat of a cult following. They make figures for anything from Disney movies, superhero characters, professional athletes and even popular bands and musicians.

The Funko store opened in downtown Everett within the past two years – about 20 miles outside of downtown Seattle. It opens at 11am, so the good news is that if you are attempting to get there just as they open, it won’t be during rush hour traffic. What I didn’t expect was that on arrival (about 10 minutes before opening) there was a line wrapping around the block… on a Tuesday! Because of this it took us a little longer than expected to find parking, but I think if you showed up around 11:20/11:30 it would be much more manageable by that time.

Once inside I was incredibly impressed! This is the kind of place a fan girl could spend a serious part of her day. There are a large number of sections to the store per action hero preference… are you into Disney princesses? Or are you more of a Marvel fan? Star Wars? Harry Potter?! The list goes on. In each specific area you will find not only Funko pop figurines but lots of fun fan gear for everyone in the fam. Honestly there was so much cool stuff that when I told her she could pick one for herself it was too much to sort through to decide on one fav, so she grabbed one for me and one for dad too. At $9 can you even be mad tho?

Funko Star Wars 1
The Star Wars section at Funko was my favorite!

We spent a solid hour plus exploring the different areas, taking pictures with figurines, and deciding what to bring home. Overall, Funko is a super fun place to kill some time… exponentially so if you are a kinda nerdy fam like us!
