Making your Coffee Addiction Sustainable

Can we talk for a second about one of my biggest pet peeves?

It is one-use non compost-able products, especially fast-food plastics. There are how many billion people living on this planet now? We are already drowning in plastic garbage and if people continue to use and toss away single-use plastics, things are going to pile up insurmountably. Given this, it is important for all of us to do our part in limiting the non compost-able, one-use products we make part of our daily lives.

This leads me to a specific product regarding this pet peeve… K-Cups. That’s right, I’m looking at you Keurig! I think single-use coffee products are some of the most wasteful products, mostly because they are pointless! There are how many different ways to brew coffee that don’t involve throwing plastic into the garbage, I just don’t see why it is necessary. Not-to-mention they make coffee that tastes like plastic, and plastics are bad for your health anyways.

Okay, I am done picking on Keurig because I know they have a huge fan base out there. What am I here to tell you then? That you can have your daily Joe without tossing throngs of plastic into landfills and oceans every year.

Firstly, if you just can’t quit the K-Cup, its time to go to a reusable one. Please, for the sake of everyone knock it off with this single-use nonsense and switch over to something like these reusable K-Cups. You can pack your favorite grounds in here and it will only take another 20 seconds of your life. Please don’t tell me you don’t have time for that… as a working mom with two kids I’m going to let you know that is BS. We have a Keurig at work and I purchased one of these to keep in the office along with some ground coffee for my own use, and to encourage others in the workplace to participate.

If you are interested in other easy ways to brew coffee, I would suggest getting yourself a French Press! My husband and I had a crummy coffee maker for years and always wondered why coffee tasted better when we went out to fancy restaurants. We would buy good coffee, but in our electric pot the experience just wasn’t the same. One day we realized it was not the difference of coffee, but how it was being brewed! We had an epiphany that every time we ordered coffee and got a pot we LOVED it was brought to us in a French Press. A French Press couldn’t be easier to use, you just pour boiling water into your beaker and let it steep (just like a tea), then pour and enjoy after a few minutes. No filters needed!

Another great thing about a French Press is that they travel well. We purchased a stainless steel one and bring it when we camp. Who needs that disgusting instant coffee at the campsite in the morning!? All you need is a pot to boil water and to remember your press and coffee and you can enjoy a pot just as good as you would make at home.

Doesn’t this seem like an easy transition to make? All it takes is one little transition here and there away from plastics and before you know it you will be living a much more sustainable lifestyle. Give it a try, I promise the coffee will be better too 🙂

    1. I feel like the more we talk about it, the more people will think about it and that’s all we can do to help others start the process of helping the planet and living a sustainable lifestyle!

  1. My husband uses a refillable K-cup too – it works so well & then he can have all the different flavors & brands he loves too, that way
