Is anyone else out there totally hooked on the scent of fresh laundry like I am? My whole life I have just loved the smell of freshly cleaned laundry in the dryer with scented dryer sheets. So refreshing!
Unfortunately as I have gotten older I have learned that smell I find so fresh and wonderful is composed purely of chemicals… manufactured scents like these are pretty much one of the most harmful things for our bodies that we use in everyday life. Artificial scents are laden with carcinogens, and the dryer sheets themselves are so coated they leave lots of residue on your clothing and take enormous amounts of time to break down in landfills.
As I push to help my family live a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, dryer sheets are an obvious item that needs to go. As a single-use product they are simply not eco-friendly, nor are they good for you. I was sad to give up my coveted “fresh linen” fake scent, but when it it came down to it, this was one of the easiest transitions I have made. For me all dryer sheets really accomplished was making my laundry smell nice, and there are other healthier ways to accomplish this!
After a good amount of research, I made the decision to switch to wool dryer balls. These felt balls are 100% natural, hypoallergenic and are entirely reusable. They are great for people with allergies and sensitive skin as there are no synthetics or harsh chemicals used to make them. With more reading around I was actually finding most people preferring these natural dryer balls to dryer sheets as the process of them being tossed fluffs up your clothes while helping air to circulate in your dryer making it more efficient. Not to mention, dryer balls will save you money in the long run!
One brand with great reviews is “Woolzies” has a great list of benefits to using their product:
- Work great for fluffing down blankets & towels
- Replaces fabric softener
- Reduces Drying Time by 25% Lab tested
- Softens your laundry naturally help reduce wrinkles and static
- LASTS FOR 1,000 LOADS
Okay, so I found a great solution for fluffing my laundry, but what about keeping it smelling fresh? Do not worry friends, because I am super happy with the transition I made here too! It started with a family member talking me into joining one of those essential oil memberships. And you are now thinking “Oh Brother!”. But really, I do want you to listen to me here. The essential oil brand I use is Young Living, and their claim to fame is using the purest form of extraction to get their oils, which in-turn delivers you beautiful scents with zero chemicals or additives. These essential oils in their purest form not only smell wonderful, but they have been proven to have emotional and physical wellness benefits… all you have to do is add a few drops to your wool dryer balls and your laundry will come out smelling amazing! My favorite scents I have been using are Lavender and Tea Tree.
Doesn’t this seem like an easy transition to make? With how affordable a pack of dryer balls are and how long they last(Woolzies are 6 for $20 on Amazon with free shipping for Prime members, each good for 1000 LOADS!) it really was a piece of cake for me. One more small step towards living a sustainable lifestyle accomplished!
